DOT releases safety guidelines statement

Early today the Wisconsin Department of Transport released a statement urging motorists to double-check their towing connections are secure to avoid the possibility of injuries and death.’

The announcement follows the tragic April 20 death of a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student who was killed when the trailer attached to a pickup truck passing by her on U.S. 41 came loose and struck her car.

The trailer-truck accident could have been avoided if the fastener had not come loose.

“For safe towing on roadways, state law requires that the ball-and-hitch coupling assembly must match exactly and fit securely,” Wisconsin State Patrol Lt. Nick Scorcio said in the release.

Scorcio reminds drivers to ensure that they connect their trailer and vehicle with two short chains of an appropriate length.

Drivers in violation of the laws face fines and two demerits on their driver’s license for each infraction.
