Elderly Found to Be Dangerous on Roads

A recent study has found that drivers over the age of sixty-five may be significantly impaired when it comes to noticing and reacting quickly to pedestrians and other hazards on the road.

The study was conducted at a university and used virtual simulation technology, along with a real car, to test the idea that elderly drivers have slower reaction times. The results showed that elderly drivers failed to notice half of the outside stimuli that was presented to them. It was also found that the elderly must drive about twenty percent lower than the actual speed limit, in order to have time to react to hazards in the road.

These findings implicate that pedestrians, as well as the elderly, are not entirely safe on the road.
