Wisconsin #1 in drunk driving

In a survey conducted in 2009 by the US Department of  Health and Human Services, 26% of adults questioned admitted to getting behind the wheel while drunk. 44,000 arrests, 238 fatalities, and 4,000 people injured makes Wisconsin top the nation in drunk driving rates.

Crunching the numbers reveals that 45% of all deadly car accidents and 40% of fatal motorcycle crashes in 2009 were because of alcohol. Wisconsin has been ridiculed for having lax drunk driving laws, but the state recently strengthened the penalties for offenders. First time offenders with a blood alcohol content .15, which is nearly twice the legal limit, and two-time offenders are required to have an ignition interlock installed on their vehicles. Denying a blood or breath test could result in losing your license for a year and possibly having your car impounded.
