New simulator to increase motorcycle safety

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is taking a new motorcycle safety program around the state to promote awareness of motorcycle safety. In August 2010, the state introduced the federally-funded THE REF, which stands for Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility. Riders sit on a motorcycle-riding simulator that puts users in  life-like motorcycle situations.

The program aims to educate new and experienced riders about motorcycle safety, like how to avoid an accident. THE REF includes demo motorcycles and interactive test, along with the simulators. The Department of Transportation will take the program to nearly 60 locations around the state to promote motorcycle safety awareness. Since it’s introduction last summer, there has been 16 fewer motorcycle-related fatalities.
