Traffic deaths rise in February

Last month saw an increase in traffic-related fatalities compared to February 2011, according to preliminary statistics released by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. 34 people died in 25 traffic accidents in February, 12 more than last year and one more than the state’s five-year average.

So far this year, 78 people have died in 65 accidents on Wisconsin roadways. This number is 17 more than at this time in 2011 and seven more than the five-year average.

Officials at the department say that many of these deaths could have been avoided if people wore their seatbelts. Seatbelts are the best way to protect yourself from being ejected from the vehicle or violently tossed around.
