Investigation launched into air bag injury

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a complaint it received last month by a driver who says a defective air bag sliced his ear in half. The man was driving a new 2012 Hyundai Elantra when he was injured.

According to the complaint, the driver was in an accident when a side-curtain air bag deployed, dislodging a metal bracket. The metal bracket hit and sliced his ear. Hyundai officials says they have not received any other reports of air bag defects in the 2012 Elantra.

The Elantra, Hyundai’s second-best selling car, was named North American Car of the Year in January.
