Volvo fined $1.5 million for recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has fined Volvo $1.5 million after it says the car maker failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. Volvo recalled 32,000 vehicles between 2010-2012 in seven different recall campaigns.

Safety issues such as defective airbag deployments, stalling engines, and incorrect tire-pressure labeling were factors in the recalls. Volvo did not receive any reports of injuries, accidents, or property damage in response to the defects.

Federal law mandates that car manufacturers must notify the administration within five days of an impending recall. If they do not, the NHTSA will issue fines. Volvo says it will pay the fine to avoid litigation.
